What’s the Difference Between LSD and Psilocybin?

Magic mushrooms are two of the most common psychedelic drugs. They’re both considered very safe, and they can have profound spiritual effects for users. Plus, tripping on them can be super fun!

So you might be wondering: which one should I try?

What Is LSD?

LSD or acid is a semi-synthetic hallucinogenic drug. Currently, all LSD is made in a lab, but the compound was originally discovered in a fungus called ergot.

LSD is a white, odorless powder in its pure state. Most commonly, it’s prepared by putting an incredibly small amount of liquid LSD on a tiny square of decorated paper. These are called LSD tabs. The drug can also be sold in liquid, edible, or capsule form.

When you take acid, you’ll experience a trip, a wild ride that might contain hallucinations, new thoughts, and even spiritual awakenings. Other drugs like magic mushrooms also cause trips.

In 1943, Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann was experimenting with LSD and took his first full dose. He took what he thought was a small amount, but did not know at the time that LSD needs only a microscopic dose to take effect.

After about an hour, he started feeling dizzy, experiencing visual hallucinations, and had the desire to laugh. He asked his lab assistant to take him home by bike, and he had a wild experience in the world on the drug.

LSD enthusiasts have dubbed June 3, the day of his fateful ride, “Bicycle Day” since it’s the first reported trip on the substance.

LSD became popular during the 1960s, when it was used recreationally in the counterculture movement. Popular bands like Pink Floyd, the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, and The Beatles wrote about the drug in their band.

Due to its involvement with hippies and other people that society considered delinquents, possession of LSD was made illegal in Canada in 1962 and in the United States in 1968.

What Are Psilocybin Mushrooms?

Psilocybin is a chemical compound found in certain mushrooms. It’s a powerful natural psychedelic. When you take a small amount of magic mushrooms, you’ll go on a trip.

Psilocybin mushrooms have a longer history than LSD, since they’ve grown in the wild for an incredibly long time.

The first evidence we have of mushroom use dates 7,000-9,000 years old and was found in a cave in the Sahara Desert in Algeria. The cave contains a mural of a shaman with a bee’s head who’s covered in mushrooms. Researchers determined that the mushrooms were Psilocybe mairei, a species of magic mushrooms.

The first written account of magic mushrooms is from 1560, written by a Spanish missionary priest named Fray Bernardino de Sahagn. He wrote descriptions of Aztecs having magic mushroom ceremonies.

Magic mushrooms didn’t catch on in the United States and Canada as intensely during the countercultures of the 1960s. However, they were made illegal in Canada in 1982.

How LSD & Psilocybin Are Similar

LSD and magic mushrooms have more in common than you might expect. Both of them are powerful psychedelics, and users enjoy hallucinogenic trips when taking them.

The symptoms caused by an LSD trip are very similar to that of a mushroom trip. While they aren’t exactly the same, there’s a lot of overlap. When scientists surveyed people who had used these drugs, they found no significant differences between those who used LSD and those who used shrooms.

Feelings you might experience while on either type of psychedelic include:

  • Visual and auditory hallucinations
  • Altered sense of taste, touch, or smell
  • Distorted perception of time
  • Feeling that stationary objects are moving
  • Feeling that objects are melting
  • Openness to new ideas
  • Spiritual awakenings
  • Philosophical breakthroughs
  • Heightened feelings of connection with nature or other people
  • Excitement
  • Paranoia
  • Fear of death

Side effects of a “bad trip” can have similar symptoms as well for both drugs, including:

  • Paranoia
  • Paranoid delusions
  • Fear of death
  • Rapid heart rate
  • High blood pressure
  • Dilated pupils
  • Sweating
  • Numbness
  • Tremors

LSD and magic mushrooms are also two of the most common substances used in microdosing. There is some scientific evidence that leads researchers to believe that microdosing could have some significant health effects, specifically for mental conditions.

How LSD & Psilocybin Are Different

The highs of LSD and psilocybin mushrooms can feel a little different. Users say that magic mushrooms deliver a chill, mellow trip, while LSD trips are more likely to be stimulating and uplifting.

Magic mushrooms are more likely to lead to a body high, and an acid high is more in your head. Mushrooms are more likely to cause spiritual revelations, while LSD trips are more simple fun. However, both can open up new connections in your brain and change your perspective.

It only takes an hour or two to come down from a mushroom trip. However, LSD’s effects can linger for a day or more.

Dosage

Magic mushrooms and LSD require dramatically different dosing.

The dosage for mushrooms is significantly higher than that for LSD. A microdose of shrooms is about 0.35 grams, a low effective dose is 1 gram, and a high dose is 3.5-5 grams.

LSD is dosed entirely differently. Instead of being measured in grams, it’s dosed in micrograms. A dose for a mild LSD trip is about 25 micrograms. That’s 0.000025 of a gram. To have a stronger trip, you can take approximately 100-200 micrograms. That’s an incredibly small amount!

How Do I Choose Which to Try First?

You can have an amazing experience on either psilocybin mushrooms or LSD. If you want to just try one to start, you need to figure out what you’re looking for in your trip.

Magic mushrooms lead to trips that will leave you feeling connected to nature and spirituality. You’ll feel the magic mushrooms in your body as well as in your mind. You’ll experience smooth and earthy visuals that will blow you away.

LSD is an awesome choice if you’re looking for a trip that’s more uplifting and stimulating. An LSD trip can be a great way to have a revelation about a problem or a change in perspective. You’ll see crisp, clear visuals that will shift rapidly, leading to a different experience than mushrooms.

If you want to have a longer, fuller experience with a trip, take some LSD. If you want to have a shorter experience and you don’t want to worry about still being under the influence the next day, choose psilocybin mushrooms instead.
